The play has become like a broad comedy. Al Pacino even did a version where he plays Levine. I think it's an indication of where the audience went with this show, which is that it became a series of laugh lines and applause lines as opposed to what it started out as. It was written in the 80s during the stock market boom. But you can't get around the fact that Mamet's intent is to reveal kind of like the dying middle aged American masculine aesthetic.
