The End of Prisons - Part 1
The creation of Eastern State and other penitentiaries institutionalized criminalization. In the decades after their creation, prisons became a place where America sent people it deemed undesirable. People were imprisoned for being gay, for being immigrants, and as you'll see in our next story, for being black. This last piece, Race, sets the stage for mass incarceration.
