The History of Ichigo in Japan

In 1896-1904, high school students played against sailors from the USS Kentucky and Okohama Athletic Club. Out of a total of 9 games, they won 8 losing 1 game of scant 5-6. The Yokohama Ichigo games are generally described as the turning point for Japanese baseball. It ensured that baseball would become the most popular Western sport in Japan by far. Today Japan has 12 professional teams, and the high school championships are one of the most watched events in the nation.
