The british have no existential political value to indians, you know. They're not powerful in 19 o five o eight, but theyre incredibly powerful today. And that's really what the book is about. In india it departs from western political ideas, even as it remakes them in a big way. The state will be the author of violence, its protector and its legitimate user. So the foreigner and the external always are kind of theorized, and also not just theorized, but weaponized as the enemy.
