In 1917, Julius Rosenwald teamed up with Booker T. Washington to build quality schools for black children in the segregated south. By 1928, more than one in five schools for black kids were Rosenwald schools. He could have bought so many orphans with that money, but he didn't. Even today, Rosenwald has been championed as the gold standard for the philanthropic rich person.
