The Miss Subways contest, which debuted in 1941, was not a pageant with evening gowns and sashes and runways. But it did have one thing in common with the Miss America pageant, which debuted on the Atlantic City Boardwalk on September 8, 1921. The advertising company turned to one of New York's great judges of pretty faces: John Robert Powers. He helped define the appearance of the archetypal woman in mainstream media during the mid-20th century.
