This is sam bajetty's fifth lecture on the middle ages. The first crusade was launched because pope urban the second, made a rousing and powerful speech calling for an expedition to jerusalem. We don't know for certain precisely what he said but we can reconstruct reasonably well some of the things he probably said. And then i'm going to talk about how people responded to it and why the speech actually worked.
