Borobador Temple was abandoned in the 14th century after the decline of Hindu religion. UNESCO did a huge restoration job on it in the 70s, almost taking the whole thing to pieces and putting it back together again. The idea is that by walking up and looking at all of these carvings, you learn about the process of achieving nirvana or enlightenment. It's like something out of a kind of Victorian adventure story.
