Buchanan was raised as a Catholic pre-Vatican II, which means he grew up with that old time religion. His three political heroes were Joe McCarthy, General MacArthur and General Francisco Franco of Spain. Buchanan coined the term silent majority during a speech he helped write for Nixon to address hundreds of thousands of anti-Vietnam protesters in October of 1969.
