Is the Dog a Dog, or a Puppy a Human?

Descartes did not believe animals had consciousness or could feel pain that they were machines. That has led to many of the horrors of our modern world, including industrialized Descartes was wrong about so many things. If one knew convincingly that the puppy was a static neural net that sure did act like a puppy, there's no doubt in my mind that within a few years it would be common practice for people to kick dogs and then humans.
