Cancer Cell Fusions and Resistance to Therapy
Parasexual recombination doesn't introduce new mutations into a cells d and a instead, it allows cells with different mutations to recombine and re shuffle their respective genetic cards. This fits neatly with the emerging view of cancer as a darwinian evolutionary process,. With tumor cells diversifying and picking up new gen ic changes that may enable them to better survive within the environment of the body. The idea that cancer cell fusions might be playing an important role in the emergence of resistance to treatment was neatly demonstrated by kenneth pienter and sarah armand at john's hopkins university in baltimore.
