A Brief History of Shechem
Shechem is now nablus on the West Bank, about 53 kilometers north of Jerusalem. Partly because it was the location of the first altar to God, Shechem was hallowed in early Hebrew tradition. It later became the capital of the tribe of Ephraim, and then the first capital of the breakaway northern kingdom of Israel.
