Until you are sleeping long enough and deeply enough, 80% of the nights of your life, you are functioning sub-optimally. Enough sleep has been argued at six hours; other people, it's seven hours. It's basically waking up without an alarm clock and feeling rested. Insomnia is essentially diagnosed as falling asleep during the middle of the day due to lack of sleep at nighttime.
