Stevie Wonder's grandmother, Leonas Aquarius, got her PhD from Columbia in 1937. She worked on something called retro lentil fibroplasia, where babies born with perfectly fine eyesight then went blind. "She was one of the team trying to figure out the cause," Wonder says.
