The Relationship Between Conceptual Categories and Prototypes
Conceptual categories almost never form around necessary and sufficient conditions or features. We have in our minds, subconsciously developed an idea of what this thing called furniture or fruit or game or whatever is. And then with each potential member of that category, we subconsciously judge the proximity of that thing to the prototype. It radiates out to these fuzzy boundaries where membership is debated.
