The community, Stiltsville, was built on wooden and concrete pylons out on the sandflats two miles offshore. It became a hideaway for celebrities, politicians, judges and other Miami bigwigs to gamble,. drink illegally and generally flout all the laws during the prohibition era. Over the years, most of the structures were destroyed by hurricanes and tropical storms. Six houses remain and are now owned by the National Park Service and registered as a U.S. historic landmark.
