In Our Time: Religion

CHAPTER

Is It a Capital Offence to Be a Christian?

Until the end of the first century, what we call christians were indistinguishable from jews. There was no name christian until about 90 a d. The emperor decius issues an edict where he wants everyone to participate in a loyalty test. But for christians, they couldn't participate in this loyalty test. If you have to swear an oath, and religion is everywhere in the roman empire, you're constantly running up against religion. And in that kind of situation, christians might find themselves under scrutiny. It tells us that at the beginning of te century, no one knows what to do with christians. So definitely not a capital offence.
