He had asthmatic bouts since he was about ten but also made a whole career out of his illness. The book has a kind of garrulous charm, it's like reading dickens in his funniest moments. One doesn't always see th its pickly, since the sentence are so long. But if you can slip back a little bit, it's Like reading Dickens in his funnyest moments.
