The Spectacle Is the Negation of Life

The spectacle is alienation raised to the status of a near absolute. We are the lonely crowd, encountering each other only as images mediated through an endless proliferation of screens. The result is that we are fundamentally separated from ourselves. And life itself becomes unlived and unlivable. This is the thread lining te bord and vanigem's divergent critiques of modern society. They both consider the down grading of life to survival as one of the characteristic features of contemporary alienation.
