The Evolution of Stereotypes

Stereotypes are basically coming from our efforts to try to understand our social ecology. We stereotype because we need to very quickly and to some degree of accuracy predict the opportunities and threats that are going to be posed by other people. So yes, I would say that stereotyping is an adaptation. But again, that doesn't mean that it always leads to perfect inferences.
