The Origin of the Mounds in the Americas

Before the arrival of europeans, we don't have anything in the way of contemporary writings to tell us anything indee tail about the great societies of the americas that existed. The earliest european explorers and historians would take wild guesses about the origin of these impressive mounds. With the advent of modern science, we can quite effectively date the mounds. So if we consider that mississippi and culture in general emerged around the year 800, we can confidently say that they inherited a mound building culture that had already existed for many, many centuries already.
