The Importance of Happiness
When I was a sports writer back in the early 80s, and then that job fell out from under me, I came back down to New Jersey. And I thought, well, I'll give this novel writing a bit, one more try. But nonetheless, writing about happy people can be boring. So what I could do is write about a person who suffered loss in the case of the sports writer, the loss of a son to illness. And he then is trying to find a means, a vocabulary, a mechanism in his life to make himself happy. And so that's how I could write about happiness.
