The crystal cave in the nika mine in northern mexico was discovered on accident. It's basically the same thing as a high school science experiment, except that this mineral, rich water had been sitting in this void for over half a million years. And it stayed very stable, a stable temperature, no current flowing. Basically it just sat there, just the perfect conditions for these crystals of selenite to grow.
