Serpentine Rock Outcrops in the Bay Area
Collard George: My favorite rock in the Bay Area is called serpentine. It formed from deep sea mantle rocks that were exposed to sea water, he says. Serpentine turns into this soft, kind of lubricating kind of rock along faults and it forms hostile soils for specialized plant species like digger pines or grasses. Collard tells us about East Bay serpentine rock outcrops where rare California wildflower can be found.
