Is There More Winter Bugs?
Are there more viruses around in winter or are we just more susceptible to catching them? It's probably a bit of both. In the sunshine, when there's a lot of ultraviolet radiation, the virus's genetic material can get chopped up into pieces. And so one reason why there might be more viruses that survive in the environment in the winter is that there's less sunshine - at least here in the northern hemisphere. But there's also other things that we do differently in the winter. We tend to all come inside and we're perhaps packed more closely to each other indoors.
