Mary magdalen is seen as an example of female leaders in the church. The word 'preaching' has a different connotation to what it means today. In mediaeval churches, pulpits were placed on the walls and not at the altar. As we move into the 19th century, that pulpit moves into the centre of the congregation. And preaching takes on a different connotations than ever before.
