Signal is a private communication channel like Signal. No government, no hacker, no corporation can sneak in and eavesdrop either. The open source aspect of it allows all of our code to be sort of audited or reviewed by people choosing to use the service or the applications we've built them. It's not just for journalists or activists out there.
