The Free Indirect Ubiquity of Milton

For me paradise lost epitomizes something really important about the character of the unknowable in early modernity. There is an important sense in which Milton never wears his erudition humbly he knows everything. The power of the epic is encyclopedic in scope and yet at the same time i um uh think there's an important sense that the vertigo we experienced both in the kind of physical geography of the epic but also in the way that words are constantly sleepy, undermining their own self.
