The Warring States Period - A Brief History
The number of regional states plummeted from 70 at the beginning of the spring and autumn period down to about 24 by 481 b c. Most of the land came to be worked by small, single family households with fewer than ten people on small plots averaging about five acres each. So this basic social system took shape in the later spring and Autumn period. But overtime, it made it possible for more of these states to build up greater military power and to take more aggressive postures. This gave way more and more to a territory race and then an arms race.
