Elizabeth David's French provincial cooking violence is her favourite cookery book. She says she loves being distracted in the kitchen by a film playing on a laptop. Hackney has an incredible array of Vietnamese and Turkish and Cypriot shops, along with bakers and good things on a good market. If there's a knot in nibble required going to the Vietnamese shops, I'm buying bags and bags of frozen dumplings - infinitely more fun than most stuff you can take away from. There's always good cheese at home because if you've got good bread, good butter, good eggs and good cheese, something good will come of you.
