The History of the K and G Sounds in English

English once had a lot of words that were pronounced with an aspirated K sound. The sounds came to be spelled with the letter combination G-H in the middle English period. Those initial K and G sounds were completely silent by the late 1600s and early 1700s, even in formal educated speech.
