The First Afghan War
The East India Company started a century from interest existence. Only 35 people worked for it out of this one office in Leidenholt Street, London. By borrowing money from Indian backers and paying top dollar for Indian mercenaries, they captured first Bengal, then Upper India, then All Of India. They thought the best way to do that was to send an expedition leapfrogging over the Sikh Empire and to take Afghanistan. And so basically, as so often in world history, it's economics, it's the money.
