In general are we agreed that to lie is to speak contrary to what ones own understanding is in some way well i would that's why i used the word a search in particular because i think it's quite possible to say something that you think is false. We use speech for things other than just asserting propositions as you point out we could be acting in a play we could be writing a poem we could be joking we can be doing all sorts of things let me ask you something about our working definition so to assert something contrary to one's own understanding on the face of it that definition doesn't say anything about the recipient of our communication but Communication by its nature is always something that involves multiple people multiple
