The Differences Between Statistics and Machine Learning
Ajhi Buso-Jang's PhD was in the Department of Statistics, and it deals with topics in machine learning. In statistics, there's an emphasis on confidence intervals, parameter estimation, hypothesis testing. For machine learning, it's more about computation, that's all scale, matters. There's a heavy emphasis on prediction in machine learning; they're interested in learning from data.
