Emily Dickinson was a recluse for the last 25 years of her life. Biographers have been trying to figure out what made her turn away from the world and dedicate herself instead to this secret magnum opus, these 1,789 poems. One prevailing theory is that she suffered a broken heart so intense that she receded into seclusion to nurse the wound.
