The cycle of capitalism needing to destroy what came before in order to feed itself. Shumpeter took a sunnier view of this and called it creative destruction. He basically said, that's how the world gets better because you couldn't make a better horse drawn carriage. And we can talk all day about the short term vision of capitalism, but we won't. The point is that creative destruction only happens because it's creative.
