Many moderns object to the essential connection the stoics made between physics, a model of reality, and ethics. For the ancient stoics, ethics was integrated with the concept of a rationally ordered cosmos. The goal of stoicism is to prepare us to live excellent lives within society, not apart from it. A virtuous life is one lived in agreement with nature.
