Introduction

Jousting is a battle for strength and courage held on a long runway known as a tilt yard. The king looks resplendent in gleaming armour, like a knight off to war. But Henry's armour hides a secret - he has suffered bouts of smallpox and malaria. Out the edge of 44 he is weakened by the varicose veins on his legs which have turned into painful ulcers. After the accident, the king lies unconscious for two hours.
