Introduction
The region in England with the lowest life expectancy is the northeast. The last decade and a half has seen a worrying increase in mortality amongst younger people, those aged 25 to 44. Big chunk of excess mortality seems to be down to so-called deaths of despair. That's deaths by suicide, violent injury and substance misuse. There are significant differences in overall health and wellbeing of people in the north when compared to the rest of England.
