I'm wondering for Islamic citizens in pluralistic societies, how might they cultivate democratic virtues. How might their faith help them develop patience with their Jewish and their atheist and their Christian neighbors? I would argue Rawls can't inspire hospitality. He's not a very inspiring writer. But just I'll give a short defensive Rawls here. You know, Rawls is not trying to replace religion. His whole argument depends on the existence of a vibrant background culture where people are sustaining these virtues through adherence to much thicker conceptions of the good than political liberalism can allow for the state.
