Saleem and the Safavids

Saleem, son of Bayezid, succeeded to the Ottoman throne in May of 1512. Now safe on the throne, Saleem had big plans for his Ottoman Empire. In 1516 he led a large army south in the Mamluk territory in Syria. The result was a disastrous defeat for the Mamluks. Next week we'll explore another facet of the increasing Ottoman presence in the east.
