The Importance of Literacy in the 20th Century

By 1500, nearly 8 million books had been published in Europe following the birth of printing. As access to knowledge started to be democratised, this allowed for new ideas to be developed and spread. Totalitarian states are fearful of individuality and thoughts which run counter to their own. It should come as no surprise that when Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, on a wave of renewed German militarism, he hated books which criticised the German army in the First World War.
