Aristotle's Ethics
Aristotle's ethical exemplar is closer to achilles than to mother teresa. The great souled man has earned his massive self esteem by being massively virtuous. Parents chastise their kids for being insufficiently bold or truthful, and this inculcates in them a habit towards courage and honesty. Aristotle thinks that people who do not grow up in healthy societies have effectively no chance of becoming virtuous.
