Freemasonry in the Ottoman Empire
There are hints and indications that freemasonry was already taking old, especially among the christian communities in the ottoman empire. People often invited in and initiated their trading partners and business partners as a way of cementing relationships through trade or marriage. Even more often than a mason initiating his son, he might initiate his son in law or his grandson in law. So like business partnerships, freemasonry could be seen to kind of reaffirm the looser relationship of kinship through marriage.
