Calculus is great and it's wide, but it's still fenced in. It has all this self similarity. The scope of what calculus can do is not restricted by being linear. In the same way that trigonometry leaves its own non-trivial constraints, so too does calculus. And sometimes things aren't smooth in the world because sometimes things don't need to be smoothed out.
