The Importance of Balance in Science and Technology
Do you worry that science and technology have achieved so much that we're perhaps not really inclined anymore to make a distinction between usefulness and truthfulness? That's a fascinating question, and I do think that we conflate the two. Dietrich Bonhoeffer said how wrong it is to use God as a stopgap for the incompleteness of our knowledge. We are to find God in what we know, not in what we don’t know. And then maybe it fits back in with this idea about truth and usefulness, that we can't see science as the only pursuit of truth.
