When we shame ourselves, the amygdala triggers this cascade of norepinephrine and cortisol. It shuts down the learning centers of the brain; it shuttles all of our resources to survival pathways. We're attacking ourselves, but the body doesn't know that. And so it literally robs us of the resources we need to do the work of changing. That's why, for me, my work in the world is to help people change.
