Francis howard, as we have heard, was an unhappily married anmarried through james's good offices. Originally in 16 o six, to robert deverer, the 15 year old earl of essex and son of the failed rebel from elizabeth's reign. Francis howard had filed for an annulment of the marriage on the basis that essex had been unable to consummate the marriage.
