The Negative Effects of Adversive Behavior
If we go to external things outside of ourselves to make ourselves feel better, we're actually just perpetuating the process. So if we snap a rubber band or or slap our face every time you want to cigarette, right, or say, hey, you know, Jerry, just walk next to me and every time I smoke punch me in the face. Our brain learns, oh, we'll avoid that avoidance. And that's been shown actually even with smoking studies where, you know,. the adversive type stuff doesn't actually help people quit smoking that well.
