Culture used to open up some daylight between itself and the rest of our social practices. That distance is becoming increasingly narrow, which means that critique is blunted. The universities finally more or less cease to be centers of humane critique. Culture ceases to be an attempt, a surrogate for religion as it was in the 20th century.
